Recommend a Rose for Mom
Comments (22)On a scale from 1-10 it is a 4 on the blackspot register in my opinion, which in my yard that is not bad especially as I spray so it really is one of the good ones. I do not think I have one out of almost 200 that never get any black-spot. Though I keep them as clean as I possibly can. Late season is more of a challenge. I adore this rose and on a fragrance from 1-10, it is TEN for sure. One of the very top in my garden. It is prolific and I keep wanting to get more. It is on my list for Spring, have not sent the order in yet. I do have plans for a future bed of just Sharifa Asma, one of hopefully five beds of just highly fragrant roses. The only problem is in intense heat, which does not happen that often the blooms kind of melt! Not nice. but you know, now that I really know what happens, I probably could give it some umbrella shade on those rare ocasions. Good Luck with your decision, if not for mum, please get one for yourself! :) Luv P....See MoreRecommend suitable rose for long hedge
Comments (11)I am with the Rugosa crowd. Our very first roses were for a long rugosa rose hedge. Since then we've added almost 100 roses to our garden, half of them DA. We live in the city and are out of room, but still want more roses. Many times we have contemplated replacing the humble rugosa rose hedge so we could plant "better" roses. But we never do. There is just something about the rugosas that is endearing. The foliage is very attractive, they bloom by the millions, the coloring is wonderful, and they never need any attention except some pruning. Hard to beat! We bought our hedge from Greenwood Nursery. We have otherwise never purchased anything from them, but I think they are the place to go for your hedge. I have posted the link, but I believe they have their summer option up now. In the winter (and perhaps fall) you can order for spring these roses in tiny bare-root bundles (smaller than bands). I believe they sell them in bundles of 12 or 24. This makes them extremely economical. The only caveat is the little roses are a bit fragile (no rose I know of except a rugosa could be shipped this small), so you must get them in (planted) very early in the year (late March/early April) in a normal year for them to survive (they ship them dormant). They also make a lot of suckers, so you'll have plenty of roses to give away as they mature. We have taken to planting them in sidewalk strips, -thats how hardy these roses are. Here is a link that might be useful: Greenwood Nursery...See MoreQuestions Re: Rose Mass Plantings (....My Dream Garden!)
Comments (34)You guys are too kind and it touches me in a way I can't express considering the state into which I let this yard fall. I'm still trying to wrangle many areas, but worked really hard on this upper level as it's most visible to me and where I used to spend the most time, especially at night which is the reason for many light coloured roses and plants. It also needed to show from afar since I'm the only one that seems to visit all the roses! :-) When I redid everything after having to dig up the entire yard (literally) to fix the "green" portion of the roof, only the 100 yr old New Dawn, spring bulbs, yucca and a few miscellaneous plants were spared. I used to have complicated perennial beds here which required an enormous amount of time which with a time intensive job was just a pipe-dream. They became a disaster, so when I had the opportunity to replant I chose to focus on my first love, roses, and flowering low care shrubs, mainly hydrangea and spirea that I got for $5 each one year at Menard's I went ahead and planted them even before clearing anything out just to give them a start. Then I had to teach the deer this wasn't their home anymore! Still working on that. : (( My few underplantings are Stachys Lanata, a lavender and May wine gallium. That's it. I started with carnations and Sweet William, but they died. I also have one Monarda that's hanging in there, but I moved the geranium to another place. Thank you so much. I have a couple of other pics that show the side areas more closely that I'll post in a bit....See MoreRecommendations for most floriferous ground cover roses
Comments (22)Diane - You’re welcome! Very impressive with regard to your Golden Celebration and Boscobel. They’ve always been on my long list of roses to try but I think I might have to move them to my shorter more immediate list! My husband loves yellows so GC could be just right. Also, I’m super glad to hear how pleased you are with Apricot Drift since groundcover roses are my immediate next project and why I started this thread. I have Red drift and two Pink Drifts in my front yard and I’m looking to plant out the backyard in ground cover roses. I’m looking for the most floriferous and continuous blooming ground cover. roses and was trying to decide between drifts, carpets and meidilands. To me my drifts could look better, sometimes look a little weedy and scraggly. It could just be me, as I neglect them and pay all my attention to my genuine rose garden. Perhaps they just need a bit more sun, some TLC and a trim back....See MoreArtist-FKA-Novice Zone 7B GA
