Belgian Waffle Maker Help Needed
Comments (13)Hi all, I realize that I am sort of "bumping" a relatively old subject up to the top again, but for the last few days I have been shopping for a home Belgium waffle maker as an "upgrade" for our old conventional Cuisinart waffle maker. I like our regular waffles, but I think I will like homemade Belgium waffles better. I can't claim that waffles are my passion, as housefamous can, but I may eventually "evolve" to that point, and I read the post of housefamous with great interest, as well as this entire message thread. I have been shopping in Amazon. The user reviews at Amazon have been a good resource of hands-on information about the various models of waffle makers available. The reviews here in this message thread seem to be consistent with many of the Amazon reviews. The Waring Pro models there have received a preponderance of good reviews and, based on them and the messages here, I have decided to purchase one of the Waring Pro models. However, the question remained as to which model of the Waring Pro I should choose. The fixed handle Waring Pro WMK300 seems like a junior version of the "commercial" Waring Waffle Maker WW150. I finally settled on the Waring Pro Professional Quality Belgian Waffle Maker (Wwm400pc) as the "latest" model. I'm going to take a chance on that one, even though the Waring website doesn't list anything beyond the WMK300A model. I'm curious as to how this is going to turn out. Comments (24)Here's another vote for yeast raised waffles - my recipe is a little different. * Exported from MasterCook * Raised Waffles Recipe By : Serving Size : 0 Preparation Time :0:00 Categories : Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method -------- ------------ -------------------------------- 1/2 cup warm water (105 to 110 degrees) 1 package dry yeast 1 teaspoon sugar 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 cups milk -- warmed (105 to 110 degrees) 1/2 cup unsalted butter -- (1 stick) melted 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 2 eggs Use a large mixing bowl.Batter will rise to double its original volume.Put water in mixing bowl & sprinkle in the yeast.Let stand to dissolve for 5 mins. Add the milk, butter,salt,sugar & flour to the yeast mixture & beat beat until smooth. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let stand overnight at room temperature. Just before cooking the waffles, beat in the eggs, add the baking soda and stir until well mixed. The batter should be very thin. Pour about 1/2 c. to 3/4 c batter into a very hot, oiled waffle iron. Alton was down on the square waffle irons, due to the heat distribution or something, but I like them for toasting. Yes, I know I can break up the other kind. I am very limited with my toaster. It is only big enough for toast made from a small piece of bread. Also the waffle irons I like, that seem to be the most heavy duty for the square waffles, are for the Belgian kind, which I think might not fit in my toaster. Here are the ones I'm thinking about getting: Cuisinart Belgian Waffle Iron Calaphon Belgian Waffle Maker Krups Waffle Chef Belgian Waffle Maker Cucina Pro 1452 Belgian 4 square waffle iron Those were the only ones I could find that seemed to have sufficient electric juice and heavy duty cast aluminum "irons" and also a non-stick finish that didn't wear off. Most of the cheap nonstick stuff I get wears off and I really don't like that, not to mention that the "non-stick" part pretty much becomes non existent at that point. I think they're all going to make too big of waffles though, but I can reheat them in the oven I guess. I'm not really ready to buy a new toaster, and I don't really have much room for one. I really love my retro one, but it is really not good for much else but toast. They do sell a non electric real iron one, but I dunno, sounds like a recipe for me to burn myself or melt something in the kitchen. Grainlady, you're a great resource for this kind of thing, but he's a fussy eater with certain things- textures mostly...he doesn't like pumpkin pie filling so I think the pudding would be out. I get lots of veggies into him when I have him, but breakfast is the tough one. He will eat seaweed chips, so he gets one dried veggie snack, but I'm trying to limit the snack type foods in favor of fresh fruit and veggies. His parents fill him up on salty carbs, crackers, pirate's booty, veggie sticks (potato is the main ingredient, I think) grain bars, etc. I'm trying to prevent him from rejecting fresh in favor of processed, or salted stuff. So far he'll eat just about anything that isn't all mixed together. But no tomatoes, or tomato or veggie juice. I drink low sodium veggie juice and have tried to get him to have a sip, but no go. No red sauce on pasta either. I do get him to eat black bean chili, but started it when he was very young. Wish I'd have known to start other things earlier, too. He especially loves steamed romanesco cauliflower; it's a hit at school when I pack it in his lunch because I've told him it's broccoli from outer space. The other kids love that....See MoreRusty
