Honed or polished absolute black granite?
Comments (4)Black ab honed or polished is one of my favorite stones-polished is acid resistant, virtually non porous and easy to deal with.Yes it must be a good quality slab as there are lesser quality (not true black ab)coming from china and india that have been doctored (dyed) to look blacker. There are methods to test this such as a simple lemon juice test.Anyway-I like honed as well. I think if the right cleaning products are used the stone will be easy to maintain. By right I mean products that are no rinse and contain no wax and or sealers to make the surface slimy and greasey which in most cases the fingermark complaints come from. Color enhancer works well too and will darken the stone quite a bit. It is a topical coating as the black absolute is non porous and the color enhancer just sits on the surface-it will wear so from time to time it will need to be refeshed. Misty grey can be porous so test for porousity and seal correctly-it will be fine. Stu Rosen www.mbstonecare.com www.stoneshine.com...See MoreDoes anyone have Honed Absolute Black Granite?
Comments (6)We have honed AB also, and our kitchen sounds just like November's: soft white cabinets & marble backsplash. We love the softer look it has. Our is sealed with Tenax Ager, which darkens the stone a bit and helps hide the fingerprints. We have some fingerprints, but also had the same with the 13-year old dark blue laminate it replaced. I have also used the Method granite cleaner, need to do so more frequently to build up the patina. I wipe my counters down every night, so don't really mind the fingerprints/crumbs, but I'd do this no matter what kind of counter I had, so no worries. I highly recommend microfiber cloths for wiping/cleaning, the ones at the dollar store are great! No issues with staining; any "stains" you are seeing are likely sitting on top of the stone, since real AB is one of the least pourous stones out there (honed finish makes it *slightly* more pourous, but not enough to make too much difference). Good luck with your decision!...See Morehoned absolute black...your stories please
Comments (4)Remember that Absolute Black is NOT A TRUE GRANITE.... AB in most cases is a BASSALT, which means it has CALCITES in the stone - Cacites are small microscopic calcium particles that you cant see with the naked eye, but when AB is exposed to an acidic solution, such as simple vinegar, lemon juice, grapefruit juice, etc - the calcites will be burned away - causing an "etch" in the polish. It'll look like a "dull white spot" that goes away when it gets wet, but returns when the stone id dry again. IMHO - What has become popular over the last decade, is to EITHER "hone" or "leather" the stone - taking OFF the polish all together, and making the surface more "rough" and less shiny. The AB still will etch, but without the polish - the etch markings are way less notice-able AND when the AB is sealed with a good sealer or in what I have found to be one of the best care practices available to DIY'ers- using "Method Daily Granite Polish" (available at Walgreens, K-Mart and others), you'll develop a "patina" on and IN the stone - helping to prevent staining and finger prints - along with cutting down on the incidence of etching too - not 100%, but better than no protective measures at all = (not trying to be "self promoting" here, but I sure do wish that I new about Method back in 1985 when I first installed AB...... The Method regime will work AWESOME on AB Honed OR Leathered - Give it a try and see for yourself !!!!! Comments (5)Thanks everyone for your replies. I think we will have to relook at our choice. :-( I do have a few follow up questions though. . . If I look at alternatives like Antiqued cambrian black or nordic black, how high maintenance are those? I see they block finger prints, but our sample of AB honed does not show finger prints (at least on the part that is sealed). Also, I am not sure if these others fit our taste. I like the cape code look (if I can use that term). Very traditional. Are these others considered traditional? It is hard to tell from the web! Thanks, patty...See MoreM Miller
