Does the local artist have another piece available? Or is that out of your budget for now? If you have to find something inexpensive now, I'd consider a large engineering print from your local Staples. If you have an Ikea near you, buy the largest frame there you can afford and have an engineering print made to fit. The first thing I would do is get white shades for your windows or sheers or drapes. Then I would get a more brighter colorful art work for over the fireplace and remove some of the things there. For the TV wall, I would get a longer slightly lower cabinet to sit the TV on. If you want to you could put an end table on the end of the couch after the cabinet is relocated. Get a lamp for the table and a matching floor lamp to replace the one you have. I don't know what room is behind the couch, but could you put a console table on the back side of the couch? Plants in the corner and on the console table would be nice. Also pick a color from the new art work and get two or three matching pillows for your sectional. Since you don't seem to have room for a coffee table, I would pull the ottoman out farther....the one that matches your couch. Just some ideas.

just a few ideas that I'd suggest. a plant in the corner where that little bench is. I posted two diff types, either would work. I gave you a side table w/a lamp on the other end. I like the idea of a pouf in this camel color to warm things up a bit, or do a stool or two placed in front of fireplace. I also like these shelves between the two windows. ( I don't know what furry dog is going to do with these,,,maybe have the toddler stand on his back?? lol. hang them well out of reach and they'll be fine. I'd put a few small plants on them. This will eat up that middle space) You could also take these teak decking tiles and attach a plant/pot onto it, and hang two of these between the transom windows. if you want a bench, do something like this in the wood. all of those neutral gray tones make everything seem very cool. add some wood and some texture to warm it up a bit. over the back of sofa do a cool piece of art don't hang them too high. (your tv is hung too high btw. ) and a rug for the sofa area A jute one would work too for the dining area, you could also do this jute rug like shown. for the wall, I'd do another piece of sizable art to hang on that one wall. This one has a larger wall, but look at the black and white picture. basically the same size of yours. you want something this big. Or, do a shallow buffet or console w/a mirror over it and some greenery, like shown here.

I've always wanted to have a room where I could have the setup that Jan recommends, but I'm going to agree with Flo that you can have a sectional. Here's an article from AD that argues how sectionals are great for small spaces. In your room, I like the sectional layout much better than your current layout. But I would agree with getting one that has a back on both sides vs the chaise. I tried to find one for you, but it actually may be hard to find in a small size. PB has an apartment shop with smaller pieces, and Ballard Designs has lots of sectional options too that maybe you could piece together. One of my favorite podcasts just had an episode about small spaces, and they that small furniture with lots of legs makes a space feel anxious. Flo's layout, with a sectional without legs and an ottoman, would make your space feel cozy. And then you'd just have your current chair in the corner with legs. Different style from your room, but a small space with bookshelves and a sectional.
