Pottery Barn Train (Towel) Rack - Worth the Splurge?
Comments (11)Thank you so much! That is the original floor tile from 1939 but the rest of the tile, including the border, is new. It's about 45 inches from the top of the tank to the shelf. Your decision might also depend on where your rack is going....obviously no one is walking by ours, it's not near the entrance to the room, etc. So really, we just had to factor in standing in front of it. You may have other considerations like walking past it to get in the bathroom or the shower or whatever. Also, our toilet has an elongated bowl, so it sticks out a little further than a round bowl, so you're standing a tiny bit father away from the towels, rack etc. I think if it fits in your space you should definitely get it! :-)...See MoreHelp with decision on painting cabinets
Comments (16)hey new.bee, Just wanted to say as a former long term renter I would very much appreciate you wanting to update this apartment. I would prefer white, not cream. The white is more modern to me. Even though the kitchen is teensy, I would love the look of your third pic....black bottom cabs with white uppers and modern door hardware. The dark bottom cabs will be much easier to clean. My own, soon to be updated, kitchen is also small...although not as tiny as yours. Still, it's small. A galley kitchen 10 1/2 x 7. It too, will have white uppers with dark bottom cabs. I love a tiny kitchen, less to clean "If you go too white, it will seem stark and uninviting." I feel just the opposite of this...and I would find creamy white to be less modern and a not nearly as appealing to me. I rented a small house for 20 years.. I put brand new, updated,, carpet in 3 times. Put down new kitchen floor, twice. Replaced all the awful, cheap builder's grade light fixtures in every room. Put a new vanity with a new faucet in the bathroom. Fenced in the yard, planted gardens, etc. All on my dime. Geesh, I think most people who post here treat renters like the plague. There was just recently a thread started by a renter who had a lovely landlord who was letting her have input, design wise and color wise, for her small cottage, too. It was very nice. If I were still renting, I would love to be your tenant. E...See MoreWWYD - galley kitchen partial remodel help
Comments (5)I have a similar kitchen... builder grade cabinets, the awful soffits (yes, I hate mine too), etc.... I painted my cabinets a little over 5 years ago, new counter, backsplash, and appliances, and new flooring - I love the updates but the soffits still haunt me. I hate them. No matter what, I hate them. My next plan is to remove them, buy new uppers, and get new doors for the bottoms. I wish I would have just saved up money and got all new cabinets 5 years ago but I was eager to paint mine after seeing everyone on Pinterest paint theirs. I think you have a great space to work with, but I feel your pain on the soffits. I do like your idea of open shelving in some areas. I've seen people remove their soffits, build boxes, and then get new door fronts - it looks nice, but I think I'd rather just get new cabinets after all that work....See MoreWe have an odd kitchen colors / layout dilemma
Comments (12)I think the plans you have will result into a very lovely space. However, depending on your lighting, the color you’re choosing for the cabinets might be a tad too stark. If it were me, I’d look for a softer white, there are lots to choose from and lots of threads here about the most popular options. Benjamin Moore’s White Dove comes to mind. You’re not limited to SW colors, each brand has the formula’s for other brands available to them. Also, are your floors solid Cherry or just stained? If they are solid, Cherry has a tendency to darken over time even as soon as in the first year, a stain may show a slight difference in color as well. This is especially true if there is a lot of sunlight. And, if the flooring was laid after the cabinets were installed, there is a chance that it may not be carried through under the island so you may want to get those questions answered before moving the island....See Morejck910
