Comments (1)The roots of Japanese are very sensitive to disturbance so the least disruption you can provide the better. That speaks to planting something sooner rather than later, when the roots have spread out significantly from the original rootball. It is best to choose some sort of plant that requires minimal attention and no need for frequent division, etc. that may require cultivation in the root area. If you were choosing some sort of flat groundcover, you could plant closer to the trunk than I would recommend for something larger, like a perennial or small shrub. I'd still keep a reasonable distance....See MoreJapanese maple OK in a pot?
Comments (6)I grow ALL my JM's in containers.......most cultivars are well suited to this approach. I would also suggest that container too small for that sized tree but now is not a great time to repot (although it can be done - I just repotted 3 new JM's this past week). Might be better to wait until dormancy as some root pruning may be required if it has been in that container for very long. Most JM growers prefer a very durable bark based potting mix as well, something like the 5-1-1. You will find countless discussions about soil mix and growing JMs in containers on the Maples forum for your review. Obviously, attention to watering and fertilization is much more critical for a potted tree than one growing in the ground Winter protection can be an issue, even in milder zones. The roots of these maples are vulnerable to temps lower than the mid 20's for any extended period. I do leave mine out year round but gather all the smaller ones together to form a mini microclimate and so I can wrap them should the occasion arise. I have never lost a tree to winter cold but then extended periods in the low 20's here are not all that common....See MoreIdeas of perennials or other plants to put under this Japanese maple?
Comments (3)You want to be very careful removing the existing plants and planting fresh!! Japanese maples are extremely sensitive to any root disturbance and it would be a shame to damage (or potentially fatally injure) that beautiful specimen. Any low growing, shallowly rooted, spreading perennial would work.....epimediums, hardy geraniums, stonecrops, Veronica 'Georgia Blue'. I really like the gray-blue tones with red leaved maples, so blue fescue (Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue') would provide an excellent color contrast....See MoreBeverlyFLADeziner
