But mine is only in it's second year so I can't tell you all that much about it. It's a Rugosa hybrid and, unlike the standard Rugosas, it is prone to getting Black Spot in these parts -- it did so last year.

I'll let mine mature and see how it behaves, but that doesn't give you the info you need now.

*IF* it behaves more like some of the other purple Rugosas, such as Roseraie de l'Hay and Hansa, then it will repeat well if it gets a good haircut after it blooms. I use hedge trimmers on my other Rugosas and they love it.

The blooms are a pretty reddish purple -- so far more purple than red -- and are very fragrant. Still, there's that BS thing, so it doesn't look too promising.

If you go with one of the other Rugosas mentioned above, then I can highly recommed them, as they don't get diseased in these parts. But they do get large, which is ok in my too-open yard. Roseraie de l'Hay is particularly big and makes a bold statement when in bloom -- it's more like a tree in its growth, vigor, and behavior -- not very much like what we normally picture when we think of a rose.

I hope you get some better answers, but thought I should point out the experience with BS. If you are in a less humid zone 7 it may work out well for you.

It is pretty humid in these parts, lots of blackspot. But some roses definately resist better than others. My 1st austin rose, Jude the Obscure, never gets blackspot.

I may look at some other options: another red HT (I know, heresy!), a red tea or a red China (any ideas anyone). I am also starting Rose du Roi in a pot, it is just a band now, but maybe it will grow into a decent sized bush that can replace my lame HT.

Basically, I want something that is fragrant, has decent foliage, lots of rebloom, and has good roses to cut and take inside. Maybe I am looking for too much??

Rugosas generally aren't cutting roses. Maybe WS 2000 would meet your requirements. Do you spray at all?

Thanks for the suggestion. I do spray, I'm just not as consistent as I should be about it. I find it is just easier to plant resistant roses, and keep the garden clean so as to minimize blackspot
I'll take a look at WS 2000. Maybe there is a good red China or Tea I should consider?

I have this rose and find it most disappointing . It is nothing like as good as Roseraie de L, Hay. I doesn't even look like a rugosa, albeit a hybrid . It has a nice scent but is quite a week cultivar and does not send up many shoots from the base even when pruned .I have it growing next to Roseraie de L,Hay ,which is a wonderful plant . They were both bought from Peter Beale many years ago so are authentic .Anita Allen

I forgot to add that it does not repeat but the flowers smell nice and are shapely. However there are much better rugosa types around . I have t date 81 older scented roses in the gardens here in north devon Anita Allen

I can't understand these reviews. Perhaps mine is not a true Parfum de L'Hay? All I know is that it is my favorite rose -- outstanding in every way: fabulous fragrance, vigorous growth, first to bloom and last to stop blooming. Finally, don't tell anyone, but the petals are super amazing to eat! I make rose pastries to die for. And I cultivate all the most fragrant roses: Gertrude Jekyl, Papa Meilland, Mme Isaac Pereire, and many more, yet this is the star of the show. "Old Rose" fragrance too, not just funny fragrance. Since you say it does not repeat, mine must be something else, so I should re-name it. Very dark red, and loaded with thorns.

Roseraie de L'Hay is so wonderful, I wonder if you have that, Tree.

I don't have that one, but I can't keep up with the ones I've got. My whole collection is selected for fragrance.

I'm saying RdlHay is so wonderful that might be what you already have instead of Parfum, Tree.

You may be right, Sheila -- it doesn't sound like Parfum from the other comments. The edible petals are the real trick - no bitter aftertaste, just sweet old rose flavor. Does that sound like Roseraie de L'Hay? As to other roses besides those already mentioned, I have a Crimson Glory I found at Walmart for $8 -- what a score! I also like Mme Ernst Calvat. Also, the old roses, such as Rose de Rescht, Ispahan, Baronne Prevost, Comte de Chambord. All "rose colored" except for the amazing Sutter's Gold -- such a glorious yellow rose, super fragrant, that there is no point looking at any other yellow roses.

"Rose" is not only the name of a flower, but it is also the name of a color and of a fragrance. In my collection I search for "old rose" fragrance.

Yours really does sound like RdlHay, Tree.
