New perennials for 2017
Comments (12)Mmm, new salvias for me too (from Robin Smith) - spathacea, stolonifera, forskaoli, purple leaf macrophylla, involucrata 'Boutin', Penny's Smile and Christine Yeo - a greggii/chamaedryoides hybrid I had and mistakenly gave away before propagating. Fast from seed...plus a freebie yellow (name escapes me but not glutinosa, which lurks in the woods). Salvia is a cyclical craze for me...and I am currently going through an 'on' phase. To be entirely honest, the bulleyana looks more 'interesting' than totally desirable. I grew yellow and purple salpiglossis one year (shudder) and swore not to go down that colour route again. Then again, I have said this about many plants - some of which went on to become beloved....See MoreFirst perennials to flower this season
Comments (7)I don't have all that many perennials anymore but of what I do grow, Erysimum 'Apricot Twist', Geranium 'Max Frei' and the lupines are in full bloom. As is Veronica 'Georgia Blue', variegated London Pride, geums, sunroses and a couple of Pacific Coast hybrid iris. And my first spring showing of Dicentra 'White Gold'!! Hellebores, epimediums, trillium and euphorbia have already come and gone, although I have not yet cut back the flowerheads on the hellebores or the euphorbs. Waiting on the oriental poppies, salvia 'Hot Lips', astrantia and hardy fuchsias. They won't be long....May is the major perennial month here!! Not bad for only a 2 year old garden :-))...See MoreI do like this early bloomer Corydalis Noblis
Comments (5)For a somewhat similar plant with a long season of bloom, I've grown Corydalis lutea (Pseudofumaria lutea). It's sometimes described as a short-lived perennial, but reseeds freely and is ubiquitous in England. I grew it only as an annual, although I think it forms small tubers that could potentially be lifted and stored, too. It requires shade and moisture, and also good drainage - in the UK I've seen it growing in chinks in walls. When I grew it I bought seed from Thompson & Morgan, who no longer ship to the U.S., but Chiltern Seeds and some others in the UK have it, too. Photo from the Missouri Botanical Garden:...See MoreHere for a bit and then gone: "Corydalis Noblis"
Comments (0)More and more I like these plants that go completely dormant ie disappear completely. I find them...intriguing. Corydalis Noblis is an example of a larger perennial that will go fully dormant. (I was hoping to wait till the flowers were larger but the stand was zapped by a heavy frost last night :( )...See Moreperen.all Zone 5a Ontario Canada
